On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, the Township had the pleasure to witness their Police Department receive their plaque for attaining the status of being an Accredited Police Department. Chief Donald J. Cokus Jr. was presented with their plaque by Chief James Adams (ret), Pennsylvania Chief of Police Association's (PCPA) Accreditation Program Coordinator. The Police Department was recommended to be accredited on September 21. 2023 by a panel of three assessors that came to the department for two days and reviewed policies, training, and accountability for high-liability areas such as vehicle pursuits, vehicle operation, critical incident response, investigative techniques, use of force, personnel management, and evidence handling. There were 125 Standards that the assessors looked at, as well as proofs submitted by the Police Department to show compliance. They were then voted to be Accredited by the PLEAC (Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission) on October 26, 2023.
Law enforcement accreditation is a process where agencies operate within a specific set of state and nationally recognized standards within the industry. There are 1207 police departments in Pennsylvania with 183 being Accredited. With that being said, there are 140 police departments in Allegheny County with 18 being Accredited.
