Utility Scams - Don't Become a Victim!

Graphic with the words SCAM ALERT

Utility scams are gaining in popularity, and there are a few important things that you should know in order to prevent becoming a victim. Please share this information with family and friends who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.

The following information was shared from First Energy/West Penn Power:

  • Customers have been targeted by criminals through schemes that include door-to-door visits, phone calls, and electronic communications. For your safety and security, we urge all customers to remain vigilant against con artists who claim to be associated with our company.
  • Customers that are behind on their accounts may be targeted. Reps will not call or email to demand immediate payment to prevent shutoff.
  • Scammers can use caller ID spoofing software to make their phone numbers appear legitimate.
  • Phone greetings and hold messages may mimic those of a legitimate business.
  • First Energy employees will never contact customers to request sensitive information such as social security numbers or bank account information.
  • While First Energy may place a courtesy calls to customers to remind them of an outstanding balance, they'll never require a pre-paid money card as the only form of payment.
  • Never allow anyone claiming to be a utility employee into your home unless you've scheduled an appointment and the employee presents proper identification.

Remember, if you are EVER unsure about the identity of anyone representing ANY utility company, regardless of HOW they contact you, it's your RIGHT to verify their identity before giving OR confirming information. Call your utility provider DIRECTLY using the phone number on your monthly statement, or you may also call the North Fayette Police non-emergency number at 412-787-8900 if you feel that you've been targeted in a utility scam.
